Live At The EdgewaterDuring the 1950’s, Madison, Wisonsin’s Edgewater Hotel played host to America’s most celebrated big bands, and as many as 2,500 dancers, who ‘moved’ to their favorite music! Owing to the foresight of the Edgewater’s Augic Faulkner, these unreleased recordings have been preserved for musical history. Three notable sets showcasing Tex Beneke, Stan Kenton and Ralph Flanagan, have been restored for this collection.

Gordon Lee “Tex” Beneke had served as vocalist and saxophonist with Glen Miller’s band, one of teh most original and popular of the swing era. Following Miller’s tragic death in December, 1944, Beneke was chosen by Miller’s widow to lead a reformulated Glenn Miller Orchestra that retained Glenn’s sound. The group scored several hits over the next five years. However, Beneke felt restricted by merely emulating Miller’s familiar reed-centered sound and he left the band in 1950 to form one of his own, which remained popular for decades. The performance heard here, a July4, 1952, set at the Edgewater, reveals Tex’s band retaining much of the Miller mood and sound.

The best of the “Big Bands” is represented by this legendary, vintage release from our archives. Never before released, these live restored recordings will take you back to the beautiful Edgewater Hotel in Madison, Wisconsin. They capture an era in its waning days, and the crowds that embraced this music:
