Princess Diana: England’s Rose, An Audio Tribute
She was born on July 1, 1961 as Diana Spencer near Sandringham. In later life she was to become one of the most adored members of the British Royal Family. She was the 4th child of John Spencer (Viscount Althorp), her father, and his then wife, Frances Roche.
She interestingly didn’t shine at school at all although she showed some skills for dance and piano. After leaving education she moved through a number of posts including nanny, dance instructor, playgroup assistant, cleaner and party hostess.
She only became Lady Diana Spencer when her father inherited his title, Earl of Spencer in 1975. Some time later in 1980 she started seeing Prince Charles and in 1981 the engagement was announced. She then became Princess of Wales when married later that same year.
Although commonly known as ‘Lady Diana Spencer’, her full titles were Princess of Wales, Duchess of Cornwall, Duchess of Rothesay, Countess of Chester and Baroness of Renfrew! She had 2 sons who are currently known as Prine William and Prince Harry.
During her married life, and indeed for much after, she engaged in a variety of public engagements, fund-raising and charity work. She received much attention for her support of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines.
Her marriage, for whatever reasons, didn’t survive and she divorced in 1996 after both she and the Prince received a letter from the Queen requesting “an early divorce”. Sadly, almost exactly a year later, she was killed in a car crash which resulted in some of the most unprecedented scenes of mourning and public tributes in Britain. Clearly she was well-loved by the British public as well as others around the world.
